Avgarde
BIT20 Ensemble plays Tristan Murail's Winter Fragments, an electro-achoustic work at Avgarde. Avgarde is Bergen's new music concert series and was established in 2006 as a meeting point for composers, musicians and audience in Bergen.
The works should have been playedon last month's Avgarde, but because of illness
it had to be postponed.
Winter Fragments is an acknowledgement of the festival where the piece was premiered, "Sounds
of winter and today" (le Festival Sons d'hiver et d'aujourd'hui), and the experience
of a genuine winter the year it was written. The composer lives north of New York,
a region of lakes and small mountains. The composer says: "For the most part the
sun shone brightly and its intense light bathed the house, which is open to nature
all round. Sometimes a violent storm would arise, followed by silence, and the
blinding light would come back. Perhaps the "fragments of winter" are there."
BIT20 is a partner in the European project Integra led by Birmingham Conservatoire
in the UK and supported by the Culture programme of the European Commission. Integra
is developing a new software environment to make music with live electronics,
modernising works that use old technology, commissioning composers and overseeing
an exciting programme of performances. Read more about Integra
